GENTAMYCIN OUBARI is an antibiotic of aminoglycosides group. It is used as a monotherapy, or it may be co-administrated with another antibiotic.
GENTAMYCIN OUBARI ampoules are prepared for intramuscular injection and intravenous infusion.
Each 40 mg ampoule of GENTAMYCIN OUBARI contains: Gentamicin as sulfate 40 mg / 2 ml.
For the treatment of infections due to one or more susceptible strains of bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus species, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Serratia species and Staphylococcus (including strains resistant to other antibiotics).
Initial microbial therapy:
In suspected or documented Gram-negative infections.
Co-administrated with another antibiotic in the case of bacterial infections caused by sensitive microorganisms in:
Kidney and urinary tract.
Septicemia.
Endocarditis.
Skin infections; particularly those caused by staphylococcus aureus in the facial epidermis.
Bone and joint infections.
Respiratory tract infections.
Peritonitis.
Pregnancy& breast-feeding
Pregnancy: Gentamicin is contraindicated because it crosses the placenta barrier. (Pregnancy category: D).
Breast-feeding: Gentamicin base is minimally excreted in human milk, so it is recommended that breastfeeding be discontinued during therapy unless the expected benefits outweigh any potential risk.
Adults with normal renal functions:
Systemic and urinary tract infections: 3mg/kg/day, every 8 hours, for 7 to 10 days.
(where bodyweight >60kg, usual dose is 80mg, where bodyweight=60kg, usual dose is 60mg).
Life threatening and respiratory tract infections and infections with relatively resistant organisms: 5mg/kg/day initially then 3mg/kg/day as soon as improvement is indicated, every 6 – 8 hours, 7 – 10 days.
Pediatrics with normal renal function:
Systemic infections:
Age: 0 – 7 days: 5 mg/kg/day initially, every 12 hours.
Age: 1 week – 1 year: 6 mg/kg/day initially, every 12 hours.
Age: 1 – 12 years: 4.5 mg/kg/day initially, every 8 hours.
Uncomplicated urinary tract infections:
3 mg/kg/day, every 8 – 12 hours.
Life-threatening infections:
Age: 0 – 7 days: 5 mg/kg/day initially, every 12 hours.
Age: 1 week – 1 year: 7.5 mg/kg/day initially, every 8 hours.
Age: 1 year - 12 years: 6 mg/kg/day initially, every 8 hours.
Method of administration:
The intramuscular route is preferable than the intravenous one, but if the intramuscular administration was impossible, it may be given through the I.V. route.
I.V. route: every 1 mg of GENTMYCIN OUBARI should be diluted with 1 ml of normal saline 0.9% or dextrose in water 5%, the amount of serum should be range between 100 – 200 ml, and the duration of injection between 30 to 60 minutes. The dose should not exceed 1 mg / kg of body weight.
