CANSARTAN 16 mg belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin II receptor antagonists.
CANSARTAN 16 mg works by making your blood vessels relax and widen. This helps to lower your blood pressure.
CANSARTAN 16 mg also makes it easier for your heart to pump blood to all parts of your body.
Each tablet of CANSARTAN 16 mg contains 16 mg Candesartan cilexetil.
Hypertension:
CANSARTAN 16 mg is indicated for the treatment of hypertension. It may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
Heart Failure:
CANSARTAN 16 mg is indicated for the treatment of heart failure (NYHA class II-IV) in patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction (ejection fraction ≤40%) to reduce cardiovascular death and to reduce heart failure hospitalizations.
Children:
CANSARTAN 16 mg is not indicated for use in children under 1 year of age.
Pregnancy& breast-feeding
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking CANSARTAN 16 mg.
CANSARTAN 16 mg can reduce the level of fluid around your baby, particularly if you take it in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. This can result in long term damage to your baby's kidneys and lungs and a number of other problems.
Pregnancy Category: D.
CANSARTAN 16 mg should not be used whilst breastfeeding because of small amounts CANSARTAN 16 mg appear in breast milk.
High blood pressure:
Adults:
The recommended dose is ½ tablet of CANSARTAN 16 mg (8 mg) once a day. Your doctor may increase this dose to 16 mg once a day and further up to 32 mg once a day depending on blood pressure response.
In some patients, such as those with liver problems, kidney problems or those who recently have lost body fluids, e.g., through vomiting or diarrhea or by using water tablets, the doctor may prescribe a lower starting dose.
Some black patients may have a reduced response to this type of medicine, when given as the only treatment, and these patients may need a higher dose.
Children and adolescents (between 6 years of age to under 18 years of age) with high blood pressure:
The recommended starting dose is 4 mg once a day.
For children weighing less than 50 kg with high blood pressure:
In some children whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled, your doctor may decide the dose needs to be increased to a maximum of ½ tablet of CANSARTAN 16 mg (8 mg) once daily.
For children weighing 50 kg or more with high blood pressure:
In some children whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled, your doctor may decide the dose needs to be increased to ½ tablet of CANSARTAN 16 mg (8 mg) once daily or to a tablet of CANSARTAN 16 mg once daily.
Heart failure:
The recommended starting dose is 4 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase your dose by doubling the dose at intervals of at least 2 weeks up to 32 mg once a day.
CANSARTAN 16 mg can be taken together with other medicines for heart failure, and your doctor will decide which treatment is suitable for you.
